What a data scientist actually does
Framing a problem, getting and cleaning the data, building and validating models, and shipping them somewhere they actually run. A large share of the job is data preparation and evaluation, not modelling.
How to become one โ the qualification route
Hiring is on demonstrable skill: a numerate degree helps, but portfolios, competition results and shipped projects carry the screen. Many data scientists arrive from analytics, engineering or research backgrounds.
Regulated professions have statutory entry requirements. Always confirm current rules with the relevant council or university before enrolling anywhere.
Skills the role runs on
Which online courses actually help
Python and statistics are non-negotiable; then machine learning, then the engineering skills (SQL, cloud, MLOps) that decide whether your model ever reaches production.
